Westfalen car washes become CO₂-neutral

All car washes of the German Westfalen Group will become CO₂-neutral in the next two years. As of last month, 6 of their 14 locations have already completed the transformation.

The Westfalen Waschpark in Cologne-Lövenich was the first car wash to become a zero emission location last year. Recently, car washes in Dinslaken, Gelsenkirchen, Herne, Cologne and Münster followed.
This means that 6 of a total of 14 car washes operated by the Münster-based family business have taken a further step towards sustainability. The other Westfalen car washes will follow between now and 2025.

Purified water

In order to achieve 100 percent admission free, Westfalen had to take multiple measures. The locations have been completely converted to green electricity. The Cologne-Lövenich car wash also uses a photovoltaic system. The used water is purified and reused at all locations with the help of a biological water treatment system; fresh water is avoided as far as possible. The car washes use only biodegradable detergents.

“The remaining unavoidable emissions, for example from heating the car washes, are offset via a climate protection project in Uganda in accordance with the international Gold Standard,” explains Carsten Grunau, Head of Vehicle Care at the Westfalen Group. “This project gives people access to clean drinking water. Responsible use of water is also a key element at car washes – so the project is a very good fit for us.”

The Westfalen is also in the process of converting its service stations into future-proof mobility hubs. Petrolplaza recently wrote about it. With the new concept, the company wants to become less dependent on fossil fuels and cater more specifically to the changing requirements of service station guests.

Revamping the network involves a modern appearance in the new design, which relies on materials with a wood and stone look as well as new store and food concept under the company’s own brand Alvore.
