Istobal opens new metro rollover in Riyadh

Istobal metro rollover

Istobal recently completed an industrial rollover for the Saudi metro system in Riyadh. Within 10 minutes a 72 metre long metro convoy is cleaned thoroughly and automatically. The project, which started in 2016 has a track length of 40 meters. It consists of numerous modules and arches as well as an Istobal industrial rollover.

The enormous size of this new facility makes it possible to thoroughly wash complete metro trains. From the front to the rear and from top to bottom each carriage is cleaned thoroughly. The system even cleans between wagons.
What’s even better: the facilities use a closed water system which makes it possible to reuse about 75% of the water for each wash. Moreover the recycled water gets a UV disinfection.

Remote control

The whole program is digitized. Which means both the wash process and the maintenance of the equipment can be managed remotely thanks to a communication and connectivity system integrated into the unmanned metros.

The whole process is supervised by the metro network’s Operational Control Centre. Sensors in the wash area detect an arriving train after which the wash can be activated automatically. When the cleaning is complete this will be communicated to the control center, after which the metro leaves the facility again.

Ten more projects

The Spanish multinational is not new to the metro market. They have developed 43 facilities in 20 countries worldwide that provide an average of 200,000 washes per year. Ten more projects are under way in several countries, including Australia, Egypt, France, Hungary and Morocco.
