Genetec will be the new eyes of Sonny’s

Sonny's uses cameras by Genetec Inc. for ALPR Genetec

American car wash hardware supplier Sonny’s recently integrated automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) on their conveyor machines. Supplier is Genetec Inc., a technology provider specialized in surveillance cameras.

Sonny’s The CarWash Factory is the world’s largest manufacturer of conveyorized car wash equipment. Until recently, many car washes with Sonny’s equipment used RFID tags to detect vehicles with car wash memberships.

But they came with inherent challenges. When someone purchased a membership, attendants would need to install the RFID tag on the vehicle. This took time and slowed down the experience. Even a few seconds of slowing down can affect how many cars are processed in an hour, which affects revenue. Sonny decided to shift to automatic license plate recognition, and chose Genetec Inc. as the suplier.

Fast and seamless

With ALPR, it is possible to open the gate immediately for members. Customers can save time by purchasing memberships online. The experience is fast and seamless.

Another unique feature is Sonny’s Smart Queue. The ALPR camera reads the license plate and confirms the car is in the correct order in the queue, preventing cars from getting out of order.

It also gives car wash operators real-time data, which they can view using a mobile app. They can analyze how often their customers visit the car wash, what types of car washes are most purchased, and set promotions.
The Sonny’s CarWash Controls team is currently working with Genetec to develop new firmware functionalities that will allow the ALPR camera to detect trailer hitches and bike mounts on vehicles.

“The Genetec AutoVu SharpV was the best camera and could easily be integrated with our system to give our customers a worry-free ALPR experience”, says Regi Flanagan, chief technology officer at Sonny’s The Carwash Factory. “The SharpV plate read accuracy far surpassed the others.”

Assembly line

Sonny’s has a network of more than 6,000 operators worldwide. Over 1,000 Sonny’s operations are now equipped with the Sonny’s CarWash Controls ALPR solution. Sonny’s customers have been able to streamline their car wash operations, reduce labor costs, and improve their customer experience. “It’s an assembly line now”, said a carwash owner in South Florida. “We can just pump cars out. Our club membership sales are up by 5%, our ticket sales average is up, and our labor is down by 10%.”

“Partnering with a company like Genetec helps our team make the ALPR carwash solution a success. The Genetec team is always responsive and willing to help”, says Flanagan. “But ultimately, it’s the car wash operators who are benefiting the most. The ALPR solution helps our customers increase their sales, save on labor, and streamline the carwash experience so it’s completely seamless to the end customer.”
