Kärcher wins Sustainability Heroes Award 2022
Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG wins the Sustainability Heroes Award 2022 in the ‘Social Commitment’ category for its Clean Water for the World-initiative. The prize is awarded annually by the German Society for Quality (DGQ), which issues certifications based on the globally applicable ISO standards, among other things.
“We are very pleased about the Sustainability Hero award. For Kärcher, the commitment to clean water is an affair of the heart, which we have been campaigning for for over ten years together with our cooperation partner from the Global Nature Fund. We see the award as confirmation and at the same time take it as an incentive to continue our efforts in this area”, says Hartmut Jenner, Chairman of the Board of Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG.
With the initiative, Kärcher is committed to water protection and access to clean drinking water. Together with the Global Nature Fund, green filter systems for the treatment of waste water are set up and drinking water projects implemented in countries of the Global South. Since the initiative was founded in 2012, 17 green filter and 14 drinking water systems have been installed, giving 450,000 people access to clean water. In the projects, great importance is attached to the simplest possible technology, so that the systems can be operated independently by the respective communities.
More projects
In addition to the projects with the Global Nature Fund, Kärcher is also involved in other social areas. Since 2020, Kärcher and the association One Earth – One Ocean (OEOO), which is committed to ridding the oceans of plastic waste, have been cooperating. Kärcher supports OEOO in clearing the Mekong in Cambodia of waste – every month a local team collects up to 3 tons of waste and sends it for further recycling. In addition, Kärcher is researching together with OEOO whether marine plastic can be recycled in the company’s products in the future.
Kärcher also has a long-standing partnership with SOS Children’s Villages. The family business has been supporting the work of SOS Children’s Villages in two ways since 2010: on the one hand with a subsidy to finance important projects, on the other hand with cleaning equipment that makes everyday life in the facilities easier. So far, the cleaning specialist has helped children’s villages in a total of 42 countries.
