Drought: no more car washing in Jamaica
Water shortage is not only threatening car wash operators in parts of Southern Europe and the United Kingdom. The tropical island of Jamaica is also suffering from a drought. Since Friday, car washing has been restricted.
Among the restrictions imposed by the National Water Commission (NWC) are: the watering of gardens, lawns, grounds, and farms; refilling of ponds or swimming pools and/or for use other than normal domestic services. All these activities are now prohibited.
More importantly, they also include ‘the washing of vehicles by the use of a hose or any purpose which may require the use of a considerable or excessive quantity of water.’
Offenders face fines and ultimately an imprisonment up to 30 days.
On Edge
“This is going to affect my business tremendously,” St James car wash operator Latoyia Thomas says to local newspaper The Jamaica Observer.
Thomas, who runs Thom’s Spotless Auto Spa, is one of several car wash operators who have been on edge since the NWC issued the order on Friday.
According to the carwash owner, the prohibition order came as a surprise. She is afraid she will be going out of business if this situation persists too long.
Similarly, a car wash operator in Negril expressed worry over the quality of service that he will now be able to provide to his customers amid the prohibition order.
