Conveyor washing is coming to Alaska

Interesting long read this week in an Alaskan newspaper about the recent developments in and around Anchorage when it comes to car washing. At the moment, the city in Alaska has well over a dozen car washes. But until the long lines at those businesses go away, there’s room for plenty more.

Right now, Pink Elephant is the only express conveyor-belt car wash in the city, we learn from Anchorage Daily News. But this will change soon.

At least three companies are in the process of building their first car washes in the region. Among them Tommy’s Express and Cyber Express. They all plan to add additional locations in the future. Two of the owners have said they’re investing more than $10 million in their first sites alone.

One of them is Sudzy Salmon Car Wash, planning to open next February. Sudzy has partnered with Express Carwash, a Missouri-based company. The operation will have two 180-foot (55 m)-long tunnels.

Thick layers & frost

Anchorage sees a lot of dirty cars. The city has long winters that run half the year. When the snow melts, it leaves vehicles caked with a uniquely thick layer of gunk compared to other places, according to people in the industry.

Moreover, most people don’t have the option of washing cars at home in winter, with their hoses frozen.

At the moment, nearly all the car washes in Anchorage are in-bay automatic car washes.

Cyber Express Wash is planning its first car wash at Calais Drive, near a Walmart. The car wash service will be fully indoors in a 35,000-square-foot facility, with license plate recognition. Separate from the express wash, detailing services are also planned. All indoors, because the temperature in Anchorage can get as low as -10 Celsius in winter.
