Car washes are very important for the economic success of petrol stations. Car wash accounts for 38 to 65 percent of the revenue, depending on the size of the gas station. This is according to a study by the German Petrol Station Association (BFT).

Of all the services that a gas station offers, the car wash is one of the most important. The car wash has had its strong position as an important revenue item for years. In Germany this is in addition to tobacco sales, drinks sales and telephone cards.

Washing and refueling

The vast majority of car wash customers still associate car washing with other activities. According to a survey by the bft, 67 percent of car wash customers indicate that they combine car wash with refueling. Shopping is the second most common sideline (34 percent).

According to the bft, however, a change in car washing could become visible in the future. With large car washes that operate without connection to gas stations, the car wash itself becomes the center of operations. This development grows as car wash systems expand the range of services related to cars. There are already washing facilities that offer car repairs and oil changes at the car wash.

The future will show how this market will develop, how customers will change their buying and washing behavior and what consequences this will have for the gas station and car wash industry.
