Don’t clean your sneakers in the car wash
An Australian TikTok subscriber has gone viral after sharing a ‘genius’ and ‘creative’ simple hack for cleaning dirty white sneakers: in a car wash. “Not so smart”, says chemical supplier Dr. Stöcker in a reaction.
Grace Martin (grace.e.martinn) took to TikTok to reveal how she uses to wash her stained New Balances shoes.
In the clip, she takes her dirty sneakers to the car wash for a deep cleaning session. “Just two girls pressure-washing their New Balances at the car wash,” it says on the video which so far received more than 1 million views.
The video shows Martin and her friend taking several stained white sneakers out of a basket, before lining up them up against the wall of a car wash bay. They then used a sprayer to tackle the layer of mud and dirt covering their sneakers.

“Such trends on social media may look funny, but actually it’s often not a good idea”, says Oliver Lanz of Dr. Stöcker. “Many people seem to forget that chemical cleaning agents are often added to the water in a self-service washing lance. However, these have been developed and tested exclusively for the effective but gentle removal of dirt from vehicle surfaces.”
According to the German chemical supplier most of these products are safe when used correctly, in this case for self-service vehicle washing. But when misused, there might be risks involved, such as skin and eye irritation or allergic reactions.
Dr. Stöcker therefore advises against using car washes and individual parts of them for purposes other than vehicle cleaning and care.
