Car wash owner shoots robbery suspect

A suspected attempted robbery by five armed men at a South African car wash went bloody when the business owner opened fire on them, killing one suspect.

According to a news article in local newspaper HeraldLive, the owner of a Nelson Mandela Bay car wash is now under investigation for murder.

The incident happened in the late afternoon, when the carwash was filled with customers.  Eyewitnesses said chaos ensued as screaming customers fled.

Apparently, a silver Volkswagen Polo with five men inside arrived at the car wash. They requested a polish for their vehicle.

Subsequently, four of the men jumped out of the car and opened fire on another motorist who was waiting for his car to be washed. The man was shot in his leg.

Fatally wounded

According to a police report, the 35-year-old owner of the car wash then came out of his office, pulled out his own licensed firearm and began shooting back at the suspects, fatally wounding one of them.

The rest of the suspects then fled in the Polo.

South African law allows individuals to employ force should their life be in direct danger.
