Car owners in the Southwest of the United Kingdom ar not allowed to wash their vehicles privately.  Because of continued drought, a hosepipe ban has come into force across large parts of Devon, the BBC reports

South West Water (SWW) said the extended restriction would help replenish water supplies at Roadford reservoir ahead of the summer. They add that about 390,000 homes in Devon will be affected by the latest restriction.

There has been a previous ban since August 2022, covering Cornwall and only a small part of north Devon. During the 2022 heatwave, the Environment Agency declared that most of England was officially in drought.

Despite a lot of rain over the past couple of months, the undated reservoir is still at 66%,  which is about the same level as last summer.

Businesses are exempt from the new measure. Private car owners can still take their vehicles to the car wash, where most water is recycled.
