Foam incident: customer leaves with pink car

The car on this photo is not the one involved in the incident.

When a 40-year-old resident of Luzern washed his car last weekend, he got a nasty surprise. Eight other people left the carwash with funky colored cars. A lawsuit seems imminent.

As he does every Saturday, a Swiss car owner drove with his son to a car wash in Luzern to wash his car. The two of them washed the brand-new BMW M3 by hand. “I only bought the car two weeks ago,” the 40-year-old car owner said to new station 20 Minuten.

As he washed the foam off his car, he had to look twice to believe his eyes: “My car had turned pink.” As fast as he could, he drove into the car wash and prevented the damage from getting any worse. “I almost cried. All the rubber seals are still pink.” According to the man, the brake pads, brake disk and paint were all inflicted by the foam.

“When I saw the damage, I stopped others from washing their cars.” Nevertheless, several cars left with the same colorations.”

Huge costs

According to his local garage, the cleaning costs can be as high as CHF 35,000 (€36,000) for the damage. The owner plans to send the bill to the car wash involved, we learn from the Swiss news item.

According to 20 Minuten, the manager of the car wash said the problem started when the latest batch of the foam arrived. It previously did not cause any problems and had been in use since March 13.

“The cause of the staining is currently being investigated in the manufacturer’s laboratory,” explains the managing director of this company, of which the name is not disclosed. The foam in question is called Powerschaum.

They promise to examine all the cases of damage carefully and pay for any items damaged by the foam.
