A new survey by Eurostat has just confirmed that car ownership in Europe is still on the rise, despite energy transition measurements. There is now one car for every two inhabitants in the EU. Poland has the most cars per capita in the entire union, followed by Luxembourg, Italy and Finland.

The advance of the automobile continues unabated in Europe. Neither the corona pandemic nor the desire for greater sustainability is deterring car buyers. Car ownership in the European Union also increased in 2021 compared to the previous year, new figures from the European statistics office Eurostat show.

For every thousand inhabitants, there were 567 cars in the EU, or more than one car for every two inhabitants. Ten years earlier there were 486 cars per thousand inhabitants.

On the rise

Especially in Romania, Poland and Estonia, car ownership is rising rapidly. In these countries, car ownership per inhabitant doubled or tripled between 2001 and 2021.

Poland also proportionally owns the most cars; one thousand residents together own 687 vehicles. Residents of Luxembourg (682 cars per thousand inhabitants) and Italy (670 cars) also like to get behind the wheel.
On the southern part of the Greek mainland, the Peloponnese, car ownership is relatively the lowest: 201 cars per thousand inhabitants.
