Speeding car wrecks havoc in Dutch car wash tunnel

The damage was extensive, last September

The owner of a Dutch car wash got the scare of his life last week when a customer literally raced through his tunnel car wash, causing much damage. Luckily no one got injured. The security camera footage will freak car wash owners out.

The incident happened in The Car Wash in Oss, a city in the south of The Netherlands. The car owner had mistaken his gas pedal for the brake and panicked. He drove down the tunnel at 50 km/hour and even damaged a part of the public street.

No one got hurt, but the damage to the car wash is extensive. “There is so much to be done, I think we will have to close the doors for a month,” the owner Tom Muskens sighs when asked about the incident on the next day. “This is something you sometimes see in American movies, but not here in the Netherlands. We have never experienced anything like this.”

Mixed up pedals

According to misconstrued it sometimes happens that they have to warn older customers to use the brakes. But this time, shouting didn’t work. “The man who caused the accident comes here quite often, and actually it always goes well. But this time he got the brake and gas pedal mixed up. Fortunately, our carwash employee was able to jump out just in time and no customers were hurt.”

The damage the speeding car caused is huge, says the owner. “Some brushes are broken and some brushes were knocked out really hard. So from that, I expect the bearings are broken. And probably the axles are broken as well. We are still surveying the full damage.”

Repairs will take month

Muskens is afraid his carwash will be closed for a month in order to make all the necessary repairs. “Customer safety comes first”, he says.

He’s also worried some customers will not return after reopening. “We are insured for the loss of turnover and for machine damage and things like that. But it will be hard to prevent losing some customers to nearby car washes.”
