More Dutch cars on the road

Good news for Dutch car wash companies. The number of passenger cars on Dutch roads rose to 9.4 million last year. A new record. About two-thirds of sales involved a partially or fully electric vehicle. This reports car branche organization Bovag.

In 2023, almost 370 thousand new passenger cars were sold in the Netherlands. In addition to the passenger cars sold, 164 thousand cars were scrapped. Another 26 thousand cars were also exported. Thus, the total number of passenger cars grew by about 180 thousand. Normally, this is around 100 thousand.

Volkswagen versus Tesla

The best-selling brand was Volkswagen, which had to settle for second place only a year earlier. The best-selling model was the Tesla Model Y. Of all new cars, only a third run entirely on fossil fuel, mostly gasoline. More than 37 percent of new autos had a hybrid drive, and nearly 31 percent run entirely on electricity.

The high sales figures are a result of delayed deliveries from 2022, according to Bovag, among others. Backlogs due to corona and a shortage of computer chips had to be made up. This happened mainly in the first half of last year.
