After years of head wind, car sales in Denmark have increased again. In 2023, more than 172,000 new cars were registered. This is an increase of 17 percent from the previous year. Sweden showed a similar trend while Norway saw a slight decline.

For the first time since 2019, car sales in Denmark have grown, a report for 2023 from The Danish Car Importers illustrates.

“At the turn of the year last year, we were unsure of what to expect, but car sales have been at a high speed throughout the year and we have therefore ended up in a good place”, said CEO Mads Rørvig to Danish new site TV2.

Changes

2023 has seen several changes in the automotive market, including the arrival of new players. In addition, the distribution of fuels has also changed significantly. EV’s are now good for about 36 percent of total sales, which stands for about 200,000 new electric cars last year. “We are moving towards the political goals for more green cars in Denmark”, says Rørvig.

Tesla versus diesel

Tesla has been one of the major players in 2023, where the company has beaten all competitors. The best-selling car is Tesla’s Model Y, of which almost 18,000 new cars have been registered. This is almost three times as many as the car in second place, the Peugeot 208.

The future looks bleak for diesel car sales, which continue to decline. In 2023, diesel cars accounted for just five out of every 100 cars sold. The year before, seven out of 100 new registrations used this fuel.

Sweden & Norway

According to the latest figures from the automotive industry portal, Sweden showed a similar trend past year. With car sales slightly on the up again. Volvo is the most popular brand over there.

Norway shows a different picture. The Norwegian auto market in November 2023 falls for the fourth time after growing for 3 consecutive months, with 12,728 new sales (-41.1%).
