Female only car wash opens in Uyo

An all female staff is one of the USP's of Vikmartynes Car Wash. Vikmartynes

Car washing typically seems like something for men, but in Nigeria, the hand car wash start-up Vikmartynes is breaking that prejudice. The staff consists entirely of women.

In a lovely and inspiring video clip, the BBC interviews company manager Mary Silas on the doorstep of her just-opened business in the former British colony, where she (in Pidgin English) tells something about her motivations.

“I wanted to do something different and a women-only car wash .” At least not in Nigeria.

Seeing is believing, according to Silas. She challenges any skeptical motorist (m/f) to stop by Vikmartynes in the town of Uyo to try her car wash. “Anyone who has tried our way of car washing will definitely come back,” says the confident businesswoman.

“Our biggest challenge now is the sun,” she continues. “When the sun comes out, my girls come to me and complain about the heat.” So she soon hopes to invest in a canopy to bring some shade for her washing brigade.
